Disclaimer : Not for children under 18

Some people like food, some adventurous things, and some sex; some even like all three together. However, since we have to write about one issue that we find interesting, I choose sex.

The opening to my post might seem racy though sex is something that most of us think about pretty regularly. It is a natural part of being human and, let’s face it, we wouldn’t be around if it weren’t for procreation. However, this blog is not just about things that interest us, but also what ethical issues come along with the subject. Luckily, I have plenty of options to choose from. As it turns out, some people just can’t help themselves. For now, I will limit myself to two scenarios, both of which everyone should know well.

“I want to say one thing to the American people. I want you to listen to me. I’m going to say this again: I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky.”

Almost everyone reading this post should know exactly who said this statement. It was then President, Bill Clinton. He was caught having a sexual relationship with Monica Lewinsky, one of his employees. Then-Sen. Joseph Lieberman, D-Conn., faulted Clinton’s behavior as “immoral and harmful” and lamented “the damage the president’s conduct has done to the proud legacy of his presidency.” Ethically, Clinton also lied to the American people as, for six months, he denied any and all involvement in the affair. He later admitted to the scandal and considered it a grave mistake, though the misdeed was already done. Clinton’s immoral behavior and perjury to the American people led him to go through the impeachment process, only later being saved by the Democratically controlled Senate. Clinton may have made it through an unethical scandal, but for many years his reputation was tarnished as someone who could not make ethical judgments.

The second scandal, while involving people more like you and I, is just another example of how some people have trouble keeping their hands to themselves. Some of you might remember the recent Secret Service scandal where some of the president’s security detail was caught having sex with prostitutes. In this case, while the Secret Service said the president was not put at risk due to their actions, the question was certainly raised on whether or not they should be bringing these women back to their rooms (in some of the places where they were prostitution was legal) and whether or not they could have actually been placing the president in any type of danger.

The list goes on and on, Anthony Weiner, some Roman Catholic priests and bishops, and Kobe Bryant have all had indiscretions. The list does not end with men either; Paris Hilton released a sex tape, Helen Chenoweth, a Republican Congresswoman from Idaho, berated President Clinton for his scandal but later admitted to a six year long affair with a married man, and countless other woman (and men) have been involved in teacher sex scandals. Sex, like it or not (I like it), is here to stay. How people choose to go about their sex lives, including being ethically and morally sound, is a completely different story. Hopefully, though, some people will reconsider making decisions based on lust, and save placing themselves an ethical dilemma.

  1. You definitely have an interesting topic you are going to be writing about. Especially in today’s day and age where sex is portrayed everywhere we look, from TV commercials about hamburgers to the ESPN commercial about bowling:

Sex is everywhere we look, so I like your idea to write about it. There is a lot of controversy surrounding where it is appropriate and who it is being shown to.

  2. Interesting start to your post (wasn’t really sure where it was going at first). While the topic you propose, sex and ethics, certainly fits within the criteria for the second paper you may want to refine your main idea a bit. For a 5 page paper, there is way too much stuff mentioned to be able to include it all and still have the paper flow. That being said, great start – maybe focus just on Bill Clinton and how his ethically devoid decisions affected government operation (and possibly similar scandals)….just a thought.

  3. Intriguing topic… I often argue with my parents about the Kobe Bryant incident in Denver. For whatever reason people feel entitled to cast judgment upon those who may or may not have been unfaithful or promiscuous. Some libertarians might call this judgment unethical; are Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton ,and the likes deserving of public judgment for making decisions that arguably causes no harm to anyone but themselves?

  4. You have a lot of different types of cases. How is Paris Hilton at all like Clinton or Chenoweth?

Good topic. Needs more focus. The typical questions are about sex and power. So, for example, aside from the perjury with Clinton (which is problematic for political reasons… the independent prosecutor has been accused of being on fishing expedition), there is the question of whether he abused his power to pressure Lewinsky.
